I recently replaced my old C: drive hard drive(freaking thing lasted since 2003, got to love those WD drives) by cloning it to my newly installed hard drive. I used acronis true image WD Edition to do that. I find I can not update thru window update button. Hi, thanks anyway for your reply . I have tried many different ways to solve this issue including "disabling the third party anti-virus software" and the methods you mentioned but non of them solve my problem . today I recovered my computer from a ghost image and my firewall is working properly now .
Hi Wisam, Did you check the issue by disabling the third party anti-virus software? If you have not tried that, try it once and check if the issue persists. Let us know if you need further assistance.
thanks Rohit Siddegowda for your reply . 1. no I haven't made any changes on the computer recently , this problem happened suddenly . 2. I also used this command SFC/Scannow , and some other solutions but still have the problem and now I see these new errors attached below . what should I do now to solve this problem please ?
Hi Wisam, 1. Were there any changes made on the computer prior to the issue? 2. Have you installed any third party anti-virus software on the computer? . Let us know if you need further assistance.

Yes I am sure I installed MSE on August 17th 2011, I had AVG before that, thanks for jogging my memory. I did run the Norton Removal Tool and re booted and still no joy.
Judging solely from your posts in this thread, I can see a few possible explanations for your problem: • Failing to fully-remove the Norton or McAfee free-trialware before you installed AVG; and/or • A "hijackware" infection acquired while AVG was still installed; and/or • Your injudicious use of CCleaner's Registry Cleaner. That being said, what can you do about? While Microsoft provides no-charge support for security [1] As much as $99.00 USD for "up to 2 hours" of remote support; fee must be paid up front; no guarantees whatsoever
1. Do you remember if MSE first installed on 17 August 2011 (which was 11 months after you purchased the new computer) or...? 2. Did you reboot after running the Norton Removal Tool? [1] 3. Now that you've run the Norton Removal Tool, does KB2661254 successfully install when you run a manual check for updates or...? ============================================ [1] My bad - I shouldn't have mentioned the Norton Removal Tool in my last post since you can't remember if a Norton or a McAfee free-trial came preinstalled when you bought the computer. That being said, running it couldn't have hurt anything.
1a MSE was installed by me. 1b August 17 2011 2 I am not sure. The computer was new, I normally take out all the free software. 3 I did not do this. 3a I just ran the Norton Removal Tool today

AGAIN, only different: Error: Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.
I recently realized that my automatic updates were not happening, and searched the internet for a resolution, without success. I tried updating Windows Defender and discovered that is does not work either. I found The best suggestions on this site, even though none of them have worked for me. My system: Windows 7 home premium. Service Pack 1. Hardware: HP Intel Core i7 CPU 870@2.93Hz 12.0 GB RAM, 64-bit . Anti Virus is Norton Internet Security. Browser is IE 11. Last installed update was 7/11/2014. There was a case in November, 2012 on this site that apparently was fixed with a large registry entry, but since my computer is 64 bit and due to the difference in services not running (MpsSvc, wuauserv, WinDefend on my computer, and SharedAccess on his) I am concerned that I may do more damage than help should I try that fix. Ran Kaspersky TDSSKILLER.exe and it found nothing. My FSS.txt is similar to one posted on the 2102 thread here, but has some differences: I have tried several ways to start these services with no success. Anyone who may be able to shed some light on this mess please respond. Thanks, JJ
1. Is Norton Internet Security v21.x installed? See https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080417101717EN_EndUserProfile_en_us 2. Have you ever run the Norton Removal Tool ? Is MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) Premium or MBAM Free installed? 4. Why is MBAM installed? Has MBAM ever detected & removed anything?
I get a file corrupt message on trying to run the Norton removal tool from the link. Please read & follow the directions carefully. You want to SAVE the removal tool to your desktop, not RUN it right off the bat. If you can download/save the Norton Removal Tool via the link on the Norton page (which is identical to the one I posted in my previous reply), feel free to do so. The legit download ( Norton_Removal_Tool.exe ) is 875 KB, not 224 KB.

Thank you for your continuing interest in helping me with this. 1. Installed: Norton Internet Security Version 21.6.0.32 2. Used Norton Removal Tool 3/18/2010 due to a problem upgrading the product. Purpose of NRT is to remove all traces of Norton Products in order to achieve a clean install, which it did. Used Norton Power Eraser 9/3/2013 due to a suspected virus infection. None found or erased. Windows update performed automatically until after July 11, 2014 so I do not expect NRT or NPE to have had any blame in the current issue. 3. Malwarebytes Anti Malware (MBAM) is the free version: version 2.0.4.1028 database version v2014.12.06.11. 4. MBAM, rated excellent by PC Magazine, highly recommended by Bleeping Computer. Answer-by-number: 1. Did you upgrade from NIS v20.x (or v19.x or earlier) to NIS 21.x? 2. You have not run the Norton Removal Tool since March 2010, is that correct? Fact: Norton (and McAfee) applications are notorious for not upgrading (e.g., from NIS 20.x or earlier to NIS 21.x) or uninstalling cleanly. The "leftovers" may be your troublemaker here again. 3. When (exact date, preferably) does your current NIS subscription expire? 4. When (exact date) did MBAM last detect & remove anything? Are your logs available? [ <=that's just a question, not a request ] 5. Neither KB3003057, KB3006226, KB3010788, KB2992611, KB2993958, KB3005607, KB2978120, KB3003743, KB3002885 nor KB3011780 is listed in Installed Updates , is that correct? 6. In Windows Explorer [ WinKey+E ], navigate to & right-click on... C:\Windows\Web\ Wallpaper <=this folder Select PROPERTIES: What's the CREATED date displayed on the resulting GENERAL tab?
Again, I thank you for your continued help with this problem. 1. Probably true, but am not certain. Probable succession was began on this machine with v17.x in 2010, then to v18.x in 2011, then v19.x in 2012, on to v20.x in 2013, then finally to v21.x in 2014. 2. I need to clarify a mistake in what I have already reported to you regarding NRT and NPE: Neither program has ever been installed or run on this computer. I erroneously picked up the data from a copy of a file that backed up my Laptop, where the programs were installed and run. When I scanned this computer for references to these programs not all of the directory was visible off screen. I apologize for the confusion, which explains why the activity date of 3/18/2010 for NRT predates the purchase date of this desktop. The Power eraser was also installed and used only on the laptop. 3. Current NIS renewal April 10, 2015. 4. Last date MBAM ran and deleted an item on 12/6/2014 (yesterday) Last date prior to 12/6/2014: 9/30
Here is my path through the steps you so thoughtfully provided: 1. Downloaded and saved NRT. 2. Closed all apps. 3. Via Programs and Features, uninstalled NIS and Norton Backup. 4. Checked to see that Windows Firewall was Enabled. 5. Ran NRT, then rebooted. 6. Performed clean install of NIS. 7. Ran Norton Update three times, second one was a patch, third one clear. 8a. Right clicked link and saved zipped file file. 8b. Right clicked zip file. Nothing happened. Have not used Winszip in several years and did not have working program. Purchased Winzip and installed. Install appeared successful, but program inoperable Would not do anything. Uninstalled and reinstalled several times with no change. Contacted Winzip, left message, no reply today. Went to laptop, installed Winzip on laptop. Installation successful. Copied zipped file to laptop, unzipped and copied unzipped files back to main computer. 9a. Closed all apps, ran first script. 9b. Farbar's service scanner yielded the following results: Farbar Service Scanner Version: 09-11-2012 Ran by Travis (administrator) on 19-11-2012 at 21:54:02 Running from "C:\Users\Travis\Desktop" Please let me know any additional info you may need. Jessen P, Sorry it took so long to get back, I have been working a lot of hours lately. 1) Error code 80073712 occurs with update KB2661254. As mentioned above, I have cleared out update history and tried to install multiple times with Windows Update and direct downloading the update. 2) I am not aware of any hardware of software changes to this system. It is a Toshiba laptop that belongs to a member of our church. I am just trying to get it cleaned up and have with the exception of this update.

Need help starting Microsoft Services because of missing system files
Hi! I am having problems, in Vista, accessing my internet, opening the security center, turning on Windows Firewall, Defender and possibly some other services due to an infection of Malware that I have since removed with MalwareBytes. It seems that the Malware has deleted some sys files and registry keys that caused most of the Microsoft services to be stopped. I ran the Windows System File Checker Tool and it looks like it repaired some files/keys but couldn't repair all of the files/keys (I noticed the dfsc.sys and netbt.sys files in the CBS log). I also ran a Farbar Service Scanner after the File Checker and I will post the results of this scan. I would appreciate any help the I can get on this problem to get these services started again because I am at a loss. Please let me know if there are any other scans I need to run or logs I need to post. Thank you, Marland Farbar Service Scanner Version: 13-07-2013 C:\Windows\system32\rpcss.dll => MD5 is legit **** End of log ****
Hi Bill! Thanks for the info. I ran TDSSkiller but all it found was a threat from Akamai netsession interface. I did have the software remove it. Unfortunately I cannot do a repair install because it is not a retail version of Vista on the computer, it is a Dell computer. Any other help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Marland
Did you ask in the bleepingcomputers Forums about that Program, too? If a friend or work mate has a Microsoft Vista DVD, you can borrow their disk and do the Repair Install. There are limited Repair options for fixing corrupted System files in Vista, unless you use that disk. This next bit of information depends on you having removed all of the Malware, as Malware will stop System Restore. You could do a System Restore to before you got infected with Malware, if you have removed it all and if you have a Restore Point that far back. Do a System Restore in Safe Mode to before the problem started. http://bertk.mvps.org/html/restoresysv.html How to access Safe Mode http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/#vista No guarantees as we have no idea when you started to be infected with various types of Malware. Cheers.
I have still offered you help here; just not with that particular Program's log files. Follow the steps I advised you ro do as well with TDSS Remover and the Repair Install to fix whatever it has corrupted. We are not sending you away from here at all, just advising you to post there as well to get more assistance. Cheers.
I did post in bleepingcomputers forum and they are having me run chkdsk. I will keep you posted after I finish. Thanks, Marland
Hi, I am sorry but we do not advise on 3rd party scanners reports; in this case Farbar Service Scanner. You should ask in bleepingcomputer Forums about that application http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/498417/how-do-i-restartreinstall-the-automatic-update-service/ But information about that Scanner states: "Certain malware, such as TDSS........," Did you run the TDSS Remover? http://support.kaspersky.com/2663?el=88446 @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ When you know your machine is clean of Malware, do a Repair Upgrade Install. If SFC finds major erors that it can not fix, you may be required to do a Repair Upgrade Install. But for that, you need a Microsoft Vista DVD, not a Manufacturer's recovery Disk. " How To Perform a Repair Installation For Vista" http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html Cheers.
Thanks Bill! I just thought it would be more information to include in order to start up the services again. I will try their forums and see if I can get help there. Thanks, Marland
CBS.log errors after Win8.1->WP10TP upgrade
Hi! When I updated from a fully working Win8.1 installation (no worries, I have a full image backup to go back to easily) to WP10 TP I get many errors in my CBS.log with no apparent reason. I also don't get any clearly visible symptoms as far as I can tell. Still, it seems wrong to get so many errors fresh after the upgrade. - This is my second attempt now with Win10TP update, the first had similar errors, only more. I reverted back to 8.1 backup image. - Right before the update in Windows 8.1 I ran SFC /SCANNOW and it returned zero errors. - When I upgraded to Win10TP I chose to keep only my files, not any apps. C:\Windows\System32\rpcss.dll => File is digitally signed **** End of log ****
Hi Tushar! It can't even find the DLL in question: The module "sdrsvc.sll" failed to load. Obviously something corrupts a bunch of files during the upgrade process. I wonder what.
Hi, Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community. I appreciate your efforts in trying to fix the issue. I also thank you for providing the logs. DLL ("dynamic link library") files such as sdrsvc.dll are small programs, similar to EXE ("executable") files, which allow multiple software programs to share the same functionality (eg. printing). Because they are shared files, DLL files exist outside of the software application itself. Although this provides many benefits for software developers, this separation also provides an opportunity for problems to occur. To fix the issue let us You can run the scan again to ckeck for any errors. Get back to us with the status.
Hi, Thank you for replying back. I suggest you to run the inbuilt SFC scan and provide the outcome details as we will not be able to provide any details on the basis of third party tools. Getting the message that windows can't detect the presence of my nic which hardware manager shows as just fine.
"nsi proxy service driver" issue I'm using Windows 7. I suddenly get the message that windows can't detect the presence of my nic which hardware manager shows as just fine. I checked the error log and see that "nsi proxy service driver missing" error and when i check services I see a bunch won't start because they are dependent on .the "nsi proxy service driver" I've searched but can not find the MS link. Where can I download new windows 7 dlls package that would contain, for example nsisvc.dll, and all the other related dlls? Normally, I'd run MS dll correction tool, but you have to be able to connect to the internet to use it which is precisely what this issue is preventing my computer from doing. Thanks, Dan
Hi, 1. Have you made any changes to the computer prior to this issue? 2. What is the exact error code or error message? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 Hope the information is helpful.
