'FBI starting in debug mode' during Windows 10 System Recovery
I'm attempting to learn as much as possible about the 'FBI starting in debug mode' instance that I noticed had began to run during the recent system recovery that I ran using a NEW HP Windows 10 usb recovery thumb drive. I'm aware that questions have been asked here previously but I can't say I found all that much useful information. When taking a look at the files contained on the Microsoft Windows 10 System Recovery drive which was mailed to me this past week from an HP Service Center in Louisville, Kentucky, I noticed that there is a file named "install". It's a rather large notepad file, I'll include a bit below. It would seem to me that whether this 'FBI' or 'FBIKB' activity is legitimate or indeed related to a system infection that there would be more information available about it. Any useful insight offered would certainly be appreciated. System files reappearing on a external drive.
Magic Appearing System Files on External Drive Well, I just quick-formatted a usb hdd, then did a low-level wipe with an erasing utility. Right after it finished, Near 50gb of files appeared on the drive. They all appear to be system type files, i.e. - "diskpart.exe", "dxdiag.exe", "runonce.exe", and many, many dlls. questions: Where did they come from? ...and, Can I get rid of them?? New Development - I just realized every single file on the drive is exactly 412,800 KB. extremely.... strange.

Gah... so its pretty much certain this a a virus I'm dealing with? I did a scan with kaspersky and malwarebytes recently, which cleaned off one or two things, i'll follow your instructions as well. I thought my system was clean but kinda suspected the drive might be suspect, which is why I was wiping it.... could a virus have done that even after a format and as I was performing a sector wipe on the same drive?
...gonna just delete the files and see what happens.... thinking it wont hurt anything but still a mystery nonetheless.....

EMET 4.1 update 1 and WerFault.exe, runonce.exe, dllhost.exe on clean install
Hi, I've try to enforce security on windows executable's and got some issues with those 3 executable : WerFault.exe, runonce.exe and dllhost.exe. It is a clean windows installation, using a proper windows DVD and all done offline until critical services like samba, ipv6 tunneling and stuff where removed. When I try to enforce ROP gadget and heap spraying detection on those 3 executable, they don't seem to work properly. Either way it's a "computer trace-like" virus or a clever developer optimization that make them incompatible with EMET 4.1 update 1. I tried to report it to windows help-desk but it looks like it's out of there scope :/ so I ended up here. All I want is to report that bug and maybe have it fix one day. Cordialement, Neo Satsuki .

Unable to use WMP, install games or access subsections of Control Panel
Hello, I've recently been stumped by either a virus or just Windows falling apart. Windows Media Player has stopped working. I can't install any new games. All of the subsections of the Control Panel are unresponsive and require me to search for them through the start menu. I believe this to be a virus because when I run Rkill it finds several infections, the only problem though is that Malware bytes, Windows Security Essentials and every other antivirus/antimalware find nothing and tell me my system is running fine. Black Screen Error on Windows 10 after login
Working on a friend's computer, HP Pavillion P6 (i3 CPU, 8GB RAM). It boots Windows 10 to the login screen just fine, after entering password, I get the "Welcome" and spinning beads, then the screen goes black except for the mouse pointer, which still tracks the mouse. No Start button, no taskbar, nothing but mouse pointer. Control-Alt-Delete will bring up the "lock screen/change password/open task manager" window, and I can open the Task Manager or lock the screen or whatever. Task Manager does NOT show a "RunOnce.exe" or "RunOnce32.exe" process (others have seen this blocking the desktop, but that's not the problem here.) No external devices attached except for wired keyboard and mouse. I tried to "restore" but the system said there were no restore points available (which seemed odd). I also ran a "reset" (retaining user files) but no change. Others have suggested a bad video driver, but without being able to open Device Manager, I don't know how to disable it and use the Windows def

Hi Roan, I was concerned about the disk errors that fsc was unable to correct, and worried about losing his personal files when I attempt the repair. After talking with him, we are going to buy an SSD and do a fresh install of the ISO on that, then copy his documents over from the old drive. The only question I have is, how can I recover the license key from the old drive? This system shipped with Win 7 and was upgraded to Win10 during the free upgrade period, so I don't have a Win10 license sticker.
Well, we bought a new SSD and did a fresh install of Win 10 from the ISO file on the USB drive. Verified that it booted OK and was able to get the license key off of MS's servers by logging in with the original login. I copied the desired user files over from the old hard drive, and again verified that it booted OK. There appears to be some corruption (bad sectors) on the old drive, so that is apparently what was causing the original black screen problem. As I always say, there are two kinds of computer users: those who have had a hard drive crash, and those who will. Backup, people, backup!
Hi Roan, Safe Mode (with or without networking) does exactly the same thing, same black screen with mouse pointer only. No taskbar, no Start button. The computer belongs to a friend, so I don't know exactly what happened to it prior to this problem. I did (prior to the Reset) run a file system check from the command line (using the Advanced Boot option), and it did report a few issues but it was not able to repair them as it said the file system was read-only. I won't be able to run the repair from the ISO file until tomorrow, I'll let you know if that works.

You can follow this steps to recover the product key: Press Windows key + X . Click Command Prompt (admin) . While downloading and installing windows updates on my Windows 7 machine, I ran into this error. C:\Windows\system32\runonce.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS"0588 IP:0105 OP:0f 50 00 59 07 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. This just started popping up on a reboot. I can click close and it will let me into Windows but when I reboot again it gives me the same error. Also when I run Windows Updates it finds 11 updates, installs most of them but toward the end of the install it errors out and says that the updates cannot be installed. How do I fix this issue?

I did the clean boot and it did the exact same thing when I disabled all except Microsoft. I have did a System restore to a point before the error occurred and that did not help. I have ran a start up repair and that did not work. I ran sfc, that did not work. HELP PLEASE!

I uninstalled every single update I did that day except for 1 or 2 that would not let me uninstall them. I rebooted. Waited forever for the windows update configuration to complete and the error remains. I am currently re-installing the updates (if it will let me) I should say, I am downloading the updates. I am at a loss. I know for sure it is related to the updates as I specifically sat down to this computer with no runonce error. Started installing updates. Then the error occurred. Nothing else was manipulated durring this time. HELP. I don't know what is next.

Review your windows update list and check to see which of the 11 updates were successful if any. Make a note of the KB# and navigate to control panel. Click on the view installed updates link and do a search for the updates and remove them one at a time, rebooting after each uninstall. If you don't get the message after the uninstallation of a particular update, make a note of which one it was. Reinstall the rest of the removed updates one at a time. Reboot after each installation. Now download a standalone package of the troublesome update and save it to your desktop. Disconnect from the internet, Disable your AV, and try again to see if you can successfully install the update.
Having problems with post-login BLACK SCREEN
Greetings, I have been trying to troubleshoot my son's gaming PC running Windows 10 for hours and hours and I am hoping someone can help. When turning on the computer, we get to the login screen without problems or unusual delays. I type in his password and during the loading process, we get a black screen. The computer is not frozen because I can logout, go to Task Manager, etc. using ctrl+alt+delete. It is a fairly new computer (<1 year) and is a desktop, so it would be really surprising if this was a hard drive problem. I have tried the following, none of which worked: (1) System Restore - I tried a few system restore points. Windows said the restore was successful, but I still had post-login black screen. (2) Safe Mode - when I try to login using Safe Mode, I get the same post-login black screen. (3) Runonce - I have used Task Manager to look for Runonce.exe (and similar) running. I have not seen any. OK, thank you! Saves me from wasting more time trying things that do not work. Final note. I can't remember when this occurred, but during one of my attempts described above, I received a "svchost.exe - Application Error" "This exception unknown software exception (0xc000000d) occurred in teh application at location 0x00007FF8DFAFB2B0. Click on OK to terminate the program." I received the same error describint the location as 0x00007FF916D26B2B0 on another occasion.

Most of his games are through Steam, and from looking around online, it sounds like each game saves to its own place that is designated by the game developer, not Steam. Can't I get to the Troubleshooting menu so that I can select Reset This PC by using Shift+Restart (instead of turning the PC on & off 3 times)? Also, with your alternative, I already have a Windows recover disc from the PC manufacturer. I tried to reset my HP notebook to factory settings but it ended up failing and when I tried logging back in, it said welcome then preparing windows then it sends me to a black screen so I open up task manager and I don't have a runonce or runonce.exe under processes or services so I tried the other 2 options (I believe it was 2 options) but it didn't work either I found I was able to get into explore through my task manager and I tried downloads but they dnt work either and end up getting deleted if I turn the system off its not even a year old and I'm using windows 10 (i don't know if the info is needed or not)

Do you have nVidia graphics card? It may be that MS has installed a corrupted nVidia driver. I had a similar problem after an nVidia update, I had a black screen but could open task manager, I closed all entries mentioing nVidia & got my desktop back, I then uninstalled both the graphics driver & GeForce experience & downloaded them directly from nVidia.

I have seen alot of posts about the same issue but when it happened to me personally,i tried all the solutions but couldn't fix it. Finally i realized the solution wasn't that complex but no one mentioned. Here it is: Once u login and find the black screen,Press Ctrl-Alt-delete all at once to open the task manager...Under Processes look for an active processes called : runonce.exe...Right click on it and end process...the black screen will be gone and you will see the desktop,but thats not the end. runonce.exe is a startup process that causes the black screen which means you have to remove it from startup processes so that you wont see the blackscreen when you restart ur pc. To stop runonce.exe from being a startup process, download Autorun once you do, run the autorun as administrator. you will see processes under "everything"...look for runonce.exe and uncheck it.....close autorun and restart ur windows pc. Display Adapter issues - Black screen - Windows 10 after November Update
I have been having constant issues with my display since the November Update. Every time I turn my HP Pavilion All in One on, I have to first go into Safe Mode, uninstall the NVIDIA and Intel display adapters then Restart. This used to get it working and I could use it as normal. Today it stays on for a minute then the display blanks again. I assume either NVIDIA or Intel have updated their drivers. Nothing is plugged in, Fast Startup has been switched off, RunOnce.exe isn't running. I have read the forums over and over and am struggling to find a solution short of deleting Windows 10. How do I fix this permanently. I have given up on using a second monitor, I would just like this one to work.

When I start my PC again I have to go to Safe Mode and uninstall the drivers then turn on as normal. How do I get my computer to just turn on and work normally.

Multiple Rundll32 and Runonce processes on startup, command prompt flashing onscreen
Here's what happens. On startup, I see a black screen. I can see several command prompt windows popping up onscreen for a split second. If I open task manager (Through CTRL+ALT+DEL), I can see dozens of RunDLL32.exe processes and dozens of RunOnce.exe processes. They say things like "The operation has completed successfully" or "ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value." I was able to take a screenshot of my task manager, and this is what showed up. This problem happens consistently on startup, and after a while it stops and lets me use windows normally. I'm running Windows 7 on an ASUS U36S. Can someone help?

Hi Niranjan, thanks for your answer. I tried using sfc /scannow, and it told me that there weren't any integrity violations. Also, I tried the Sysinternals autorun tool, and it never showed me any rundll32 or runonce files in the startup list. EDIT: I'd also like to note that booting in safe mode does not yield any command prompts. EDIT 2: Now there are no command prompt messages or extra processes, but my computer sits at a black screen for about 3-5 minutes, before going to my desktop and running normally.

Hello Zigzag,Which 2 files you are referring to and can we know which patch has caused this major issue in my environment.As of now 40 machines are there having this issue..systems after boots comes up but frequently getting error message and not able to uninstall last recent patches. what is Nvidia and re-installation would solve this issue. Hi Ravindra, Are you connected to a Domain environment? Do all your computers have the same graphics card? You need to uninstall the Nvidia graphics card software from the computer. Thanks.

I have had this problem on two occasions, both time after reloading the OS. Clean boot SHOULD remedy the problem but make sure you are logged into the computer as some sort of administrator. I finally had to clean the registry to remedy the problem

Thank you for the additional information, Dutchman. I had essentially walked away from the problem without getting it fixed. After all, it is my wife's computer that has this problem -- not mine. The problem occurs only when she turns off power to her computer or logs out of it. She does not do either frequently; and I do know how to "work around" the problem when it recurs. However, if possible, I would like to get it fixed. You say that you "finally had to clean the registry to remedy the problem." I do not know what this means or how to do it. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly resulting in no boot situations. Windows 7 Lockups and Very Slow
I have a file I suspect MAY be causing my Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit OS to have problems. What happens is boot is very slow. Lockups occur often where I have to hold in the power button to shut off the machine and I've not been able to find anything to cause these. I run Malwarebytes, Avast and CCleaner to protect my system. I have found a file that is supicious: runonce.exe I have 4 instances of it: In my windows/system32 folder that is 56832 in length In my windows/syswow64 folder that is 50688 in length In my windows/winsxs/amd64_microsoft-windows-runonce_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_73e0da0bd5a77c41 folder that is 56832 in length In my windows/winsxs/x86_microsoft-windows-runonce_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_17c23e881d4a0b0b folder that is 50688 in length. Is this normal? Should I remove any or all of them?

I have been trying to deal with this problem and I went to 'bleeping computer' and wasn't able to solve it. On restart a black screen and a pop up message was on my screen. I've breifly looked up in google how to handle this, but I'd like a more personlized answer. Here is the info that was in the message: 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem C:\Windows\system32\runonce.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:11f5 IP:0100 OP:ff d8 ff e1 00 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.' Also, I went to the task manager to close out the message and there was something listed that seemed that it might have something to do with this. csrstub.exe - allows lua to launch 16-bit applications My computer also usually upon start up will go to a disk check, it goes through the process and restarts, but I never notice a difference in the performance of the computer. Thank you so much for your reply. When I get blue screens the computer restarts too quickly for me to see any errror codes. I went into safe mode and the error was still there, so I moved to method 2. I ran the System File Checker. I was reading the instructions, but I don't quite understand what to do with the files that it couldn't repair... I'm not sure which part of the file name to type into the command prompt. Can you give me slightly more detailed instructions? Should I paste the sfc details here?

I'm trying to post the sfc text but when I hit post it says ' sorry the request couldn't be completed pleast try again later'. Edit: I had to post it in smaller sections. Hey ChrystasRose, It sounds like missed a great idea from JohnRubdy, its sandwiched in there so I will point it out. Follow this link that JohnRubdy posted to complete a Clean Boot. You also said the check disc instructions were confusing you a little, so I will try to explain a little better. Go to start-> then to Computer. In computer screen your hard drive is named a letter (example like Disc Drive C:) Now in command prompt type in "chkdsk ?:" and where the "?" is, is where you put the letter that your drive is called. And lastly, yes to the question about posting sfc detail, the more info you give the community, the better answer we can give you. Let me know if this helped!

Windows 7 Stuck on Black screen after logon. Runonce.exe stuck.
I'm having a strange issue today. Everytime I boot my machine, and I've done it many times today, the welcome screen seems to be on the screen a lot longer and when it does eventually dissapear it is replaced with a black screen with the mouse pointer. I can load Task manager and other apps but it seems explorer.exe is somehow stuck. I noticed that a runonce.exe application is in the task manager and when this process is closed windows explorer kicks in properly and my desktop appears. Is there any way for me to determine which process this runonce wrapper is trying to execute so I can take action and stop it happening? Thanks.
A friend of mine is having this exact issue and I am struggling to find a permanent resolution. Have you learned anything more since your post? My friend is hardly comfortable with computers when they work, let alone having to perform a workaround every time she wants to boot her machine.
I have this started today. any offers on how to fix, there are two instancesof runonce in task manager one that states *32. really annoying Microsoft. if I stop either of them PC boots fine. If I try to edit runonce in SYSwow64 im told I'm not a trusted user **** Microsoft, I own this PC not you.

Thanks but that registry entry is empty. I think it's fixed now. Gigabyte Dynamic Energy Saver application seemed to be stuck when called by runonce for some reason. I can't imagine why it would suddenly manifest itself now as it's been installed for months. The application and server were running in Task manager but failed to open, even after closing and retrying. Uninstalled and it loaded to desktop as normal. Maybe some other app installed recently interfered with a core component of the energy saver app.
In my friend's case, I began googling processes I didn't recognize. Turns out she had installed Vosteran.com (known malware) when she thought she was installing Adobe Reader. Once I removed Vosteran and his pals, Run Once no longer hung up the OS from loading correctly.
I am having the same exact problem as well. I ended explorer.exe and then started it as a new command again and my screen popped. Looks like it is happening to a lot of people though.
I have the same issue. Worked last night and this morning nothing. Can't get to windows update tofind out if windows update Did this. I just ended process on runonce.exe*32 and windows desktop started right up.

I am also getting this problem, and seeing as two other people before me are also having the issue within the same timeframe makes me also think it is something to do with recent update. If anyone has any idea on how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated.
